Nestled between the Endert and Elz streams on the hills and the Moselle River in the valley, the “Schieferland Kaisersesch” region was one of the major centers of German slate mining until 1959. Immerse yourself in a world of days gone by, where the landscape is marked by tunnel entrances, old slate quarries, and the venerable remains of the mine buildings. 

What would you like to experience in Schieferland?

The Slate Quarry Trail takes you along Germany’s tallest slate pile and lets you immerse yourself in this significant era. A real highlight is the replica of the old slate-splitting house, which opened in 2016. Here you can experience history up close and discover your own slate adventure. 

More highlights in the Kaisersesch Slate Region are waiting to be explored—from the impressive Schwanenkirche to the majestic Pyrmont Castle, and on to the monastery and the Maria Martental pilgrimage church.
