Reichsburg Cochem

Cochem Imperial Castle is more than just a castle! For any lover of the medieval era, a wonderful afternoon on the Moselle also includes a guided tour through the ancient walls of the Imperial Castle, which towers over the Moselle Valley and is one of the highest hilltop castles along the Moselle.

Towering high above Cochem stands the largest hilltop castle on the Moselle. Perched on a massive rock, the Reichsburg, with its bay windows and battlements, is a charming sight. The medieval castle, which was damaged while in the possession of the Electors of Trier during the War of the Palatinate Succession, was lovingly restored and rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style by Louis Ravené, a Berlin commercial councilor, during the 19th-century “Castle Romanticism” movement. Here, visitors can experience the impressive interior design of rooms such as the Knights’ Hall, the Dining Hall, the Hunting Room, the Ladies’ Chamber, and more.

In addition to multilingual castle tours, the Reichsburg in Cochem offers rustic knights’ feasts on Fridays and Saturdays, known as the “Gasterey in the style of the old knights.” The “Rittergasterey” is a convivial evening featuring a four-hour program that is very popular with both individual travelers and groups, as well as for corporate events and Christmas parties. After a tour of the castle, guests enjoy a rustic knight’s feast in the castle cellar, where medieval customs, traditions, and punishments are presented. The evening is accompanied by live music. The highlight is the jousting tournament, followed by the knighting ceremony.
