Kaifenheim Theater Association, Inc.

About the Association: Theater in Kaifenheim has been an integral part of village life for many decades. Initially, the theater performances were organized by the local clubs—the sports club, the drum corps, and the women’s club. Back then, the program consisted mainly of serious plays, supplemented by a short comedy. But since the mid-1980s, the focus has been on light-hearted comedies. On May 10, 1992, the Theaterverein Kaifenheim e.V. was founded, and it has carried on the tradition ever since. The club’s stated purpose is to foster local art and culture, particularly the preservation of the local dialect. Since 1993, therefore, all plays have been performed exclusively in “Kaifenheimer Platt.”

The association currently has about 75 members, most of whom are actively involved in theater and association work. Members have organized projects in youth theater and cultural events in addition to the theater season, most recently with a concert by the “Jubilee Ballroom Orchestra” to mark the association’s 25th anniversary in March 2017.

To ensure that the theater performances, which traditionally take place in November and December, run smoothly, the theater year in Kaifenheim begins in the spring. The production committee, consisting of the association chair, the director, and three other association members, searches theater publishers for interesting and new plays. About a dozen of these are shortlisted, and the production committee makes the final decision at the beginning of summer. Afterward, the roles are assigned and the initial preparations organized. Rehearsals begin at the end of August, and the first scenes are staged starting in mid-September. At the same time, set designs and costumes are created.

By the time of the premiere in late November, between 25 and 30 rehearsals will have taken place, countless hours of work will have gone into the stage design, and many additional tasks will have been assigned. And then we can finally say once again: “Welcome to the theater in Kaifenheim!”
